Program Description
Shandong University provides an excellent 4-week International Summer School Program for overseas college students. It is a wonderful opportunity for students to gain a better understanding of Chinese culture and see some of China¡¯s most beautiful and legendary sites, especially in Confucius� birthplace, Shandong Province.
We offer Chinese language courses and lectures on Chinese politics, economy and culture, which can be transferred for credits, and we also provide some special activities, field study, social practice, and visits to some historical and cultural sites together with some traditional and modern companies in Beijing and Shandong Province.
Through this program, students can step into China and not only learn but experience Chinese culture, and students can also make friends with colleagues from all over the world. Peking Opera, Chinese Kongfu and delicious Chinese food will definitely prove your participation in this program worthwhile
1. Chinese Courses (Beginning/Intermediate 18 Hours)
Courses: Elementary Chinese, Oral Chinese
Language Practice: Chinese Songs, Dramas, Friendship Ties Activities with Chinese Students, Chinese Calligraphy, Get-together, Sports Games
2. Lectures on Chinese Culture (18 Hours)
Lectures: Archaeological Discovery and China's Ancient Civilization, Confucius & Confucianism, Chinese Traditional Festival, Chinese folk-custom, Chinese Painting, and Chinese Traditional Musical Instruments
Field Trips: tour in Jinan, tour to Qufu (Confucius Hometown) and Mountain Taishan (both listed as the world heritages by UNESCO), Ceramic Museum, Qingdao, Weifang-the city of kite, and Beijing.
3. Lectures on Contemporary China (18 Hours)
Lectures: A Survey on China, Contemporary Chinese Social Situation & Its Development, Development of Modern Chinese Economy, Chinese Law System, Chinese Intellectual Property & Human Rights, Chinese Food Culture, Chinese Tea Culture
Social Practices: Visiting Chinese Family, Visiting Qingdao Beer Factory or Hai¡¯er Corporation, Visiting Social Welfare Organization (University for Senior Citizens, Activity Centre of Communities), be a volunteer in Jinan
4. Chinese Folk Art
China has enjoyed a diversified culture of more than 5000 years. This course will give you an introduction to Flour Modeling, Paper-cuts, and Chinese Cuisine etc.
The content of lectures and field trip may differ according to the needs of students or the actual condition.
Lectures are delivered in English.
Accommodation Fee: RMB1800
- A standard room specially for international students shared by two in College of International Education.
- The room is furnished with bathroom, internet access, TV, telephone, and air conditioner.
- Internet bar and library are available in the College and free to use.
- Wireless internet access is available in the lobby of the teaching building.
Field Trip: RMB 3500, it covers traveling expenses, food and accommodation outside Jinan, including airport pick-up in Jinan Airport. We offer help to book tickets from Jinan to Beijing or other cities.
Field trips are optional, please note on the application form that whether you will attend the field trip or not.

About Shandong University
Founded in 1901, Shandong University (SDU) is one of the oldest government-run universities in China and the first university in Chinese history that was run under the guidance of a university charter. As the highest academic institution in Shandong Province and a key university directly under the jurisdiction of China's Ministry of Education, SDU is a member university of Project 211 and Project 985, two prestigious projects under China's Ministry of Education to support the development of high-quality universities in China. SDU is in Shandong Province, which lies on China's east coast and the lower reaches of the Yellow River. Shandong Province is not only one of the most developed coastal provinces in China, but also the birthplace of Confucianism and Confucius, the world-renowned ancient Chinese thinker and philosopher.
The university proper is in Jinan, the capital city of Shandong Province. It consists of six campuses in Jinan, namely, the Central Campus, the Hongjialou Campus, the Baotuquan Campus, the Qianfoshan Campus, the Software Campus and the Xinglongshan Campus. The university also has a branch in Weihai, a beautiful coastal city in Shandong Province.

It is among the first universities in China's mainland to accept international students and to offer Chinese programs to them. Foreign Students' Complex-your new home
The Foreign Students' Complex is set up particularly for the interests of overseas students. It has a tasteful lay-out, where the well-appointed rooms are surrounded by graceful gardens.
The living quarter
The basic single room in the apartment building, where you have available central heating, telephone, television, internet socket etc., will cost $5 per day.
The standard single room in the apartment building, where you have available a toilet, central heating, telephone, television, internet socket etc., will cost $7-$12 per day.
The basic double room in the apartment building, where you have available a toilet, central heating, air conditioner, telephone, television, internet socket etc., will cost $9 per day.
The strandard double room in the apartment building, which has available a toilet, central heating, air conditioner, telephone, television, internet socket etc., will cost $12 per day.
For students' convenience, the apartment building has laundry, bathroom, kitchen, and boiler room for public use on every floor.
In the apartment building there is a caf�, a shop, and a dining hall.
